If you have a waxy substance stuck to the bottom of your iron, turn it on to its highest setting. Once it has fully heated, run the iron over some newspaper until the residue has gone.
Removing an Oily Substance
To remove an oily substance, the iron must be cold. Wet a cloth with some ammonia and wipe it over the surface. Rinse the iron with water and it should be clean.
Cleaning the Surface
Pour some vinegar onto a cloth and wipe the surface of the iron. If this is not successful, mix some baking soda with the vinegar and use this to scrub the surface of the iron.
Cleaning the Vents
Do not use tools or knives to clean the vents of your iron as this will scratch the surface and cause damage. When the iron is cold, use a pipe cleaner or cotton bud to gently sweep out the vents.
Cleaning the Reservoir
Make a solution of one part vinegar to one part water and pour this into the reservoir. Turn the iron on and allow it to steam for about four minutes. You then need to drain the iron for an hour and repeat the process with clean water prior to ironing any clothes.
