How to clean a gutter

Tools and Materials Needed

Gutter Scoop or Trowel, Ladder, Plastic Bags/Bucket, Hosepipe.

Remove Debris

Use a ladder to gain access to the roof. Ensure that you do not lean the ladder against a downpipe or the gutter. Use your hands or a small garden trowel to remove twigs and leaves. Caked-on dirt is easier to remove by wetting it down and then using a gutter scoop or trowel. Put the debris in a bag or bucket to be disposed.

Downpipes

Next, check that your downpipes aren’t blocked. These can be unblocked by using a garden hosepipe and placing it into the opening. This needs to be done with care as downpipes are not made to withstand the same pressure as a house drain. If it is not possible to clear the blockage with the hose, try using an unbent, metal clothes hanger.

Flushing Out

Use your hose to flush the gutters out after cleaning. This is also a perfect opportunity to find if there are any leaks that need repairing.
