Tools and Materials Needed

Bucket, Brush/Broom, Detergent, Power Washer (if needed), Hoe.

Removing dirt/stains

One way of removing dirt/stains is to prepare a bucket of either hot or cold water along with detergent. Dip a broom into the mixture then thoroughly brush the patio. Rinse the soapy water with a garden hose. Another way is to use a power washer. Using a power washer is a quick, simple and effective process. Most power washers these days now come with the attachment of adding detergents. This would be ideal to add specialist patio cleaner. Please be aware that some paving manufacturers do not recommend using power washers on their paving. This is due to some power washers being capable of tearing apart certain paving products. Power washers are also a good, effective way of removing mosses and algae which grow over time. It is advisable that you don’t use acid-based cleaning products as it they can do more harm than good to the vast majority of patio’s. Please beware of any patio cleaners which contain hydrochloric acids. Washing soda maybe the preferred detergent as it is a nontoxic but strong cleaner which is capable of removing grease and stains.

Removing weeds

Weeds are plants that tend to grow in inconvenient places; these can simply be pulled out of the patio or scraped out using a hoe or a similar tool (kitchen knife). Weeds can be prevented in the future just by regular trafficking i.e. by foot or wheels; this will limit the ability of weeds to replicate themselves.

Remaining stains

To lift off any remaining stains, an ideal substance to use is oven cleaner. Simply apply the oven cleaner directly over the stain and leave to set for 3-4 hours. After doing so, rinse with a hose. If the stain still exists, another ideal substance to use is laundry stain remover. Like the oven cleaner, simply apply the laundry stain remover directly over the stain. Make sure the whole surface is covered and let it set for at least 5 minutes. Next, sprinkle laundry detergent powder onto it followed by a small amount of water. Finally scrub thoroughly and rinse off with water.
