Positioning and Calculating

Before diving straight into work you have got to be positive that you’re not wasting materials and time. Make sure you lay out your sleepers into various different kinds of shapes and positions to give you a good, accurate measurement of what the result will be.

Digging in channels

Before you start to dig your channels, ensure that you take a decent amount of measurements to guarantee your efforts don’t go to waste, after this, dig the channel to those measurements, and then place the sleeper inside the channel for an ideal template. It’s essential that you use levels to give you an estimate on the depth of the channel.

Concrete Mixing

After you have taken your measurements, and have dug your channel it’s now time to start mixing concrete. Mixing concrete is also measurement dependant; find an estimate on how much you need so you don’t waste it. The first tip for mixing concrete is to not over water it or it will reduce in finish strength in the final stages or make the concrete useless to you. Once finished mixing the concrete it’s time to start inserting it into the channel, to do so use your standard bucket, slowly insert it into the middle and ends of your channel for the most effective support.

Fitting the pieces into place.

Now that you’ve finished that step, you’re going to insert the sleepers. Inserting the sleepers needs to be done slowly to ensure they fit properly into the channel, you may have to cut off partial amounts of the sleepers with a chainsaw/hand saw if your measurements are just off or you just want to modify them. Keep in mind if you are going to join them together give a little extra space for the brackets.
