When it comes to your stones you can obtain them in many ways, you can use stones from your old garden, or stones you’ve dug up from the earth, but the best method are stones made by a manufacturer for their strength and effect

Measuring and Positioning

What you’re first going to do is decide how you want to position your stepping stones, one of the best ways to do this is to place them in different ways until you are satisfied, from your result, align 2 pieces of long rope beside them for your template.

Digging the channels

Before you remove the template you have created you are going to want to shovel and dig around the edges for a better idea of where you’re going to start digging the channels. Once completed remove the stones from the area and start to dig, you will want about 2-3 inches of depth in your channel (possibly more dependent on the size). Use a level to measure the depth.

Filling your channel

After you’ve finished digging in your channel, you are going to want to fill it with sand, use a bucket and pour roughly an inch of sand into the channel for your stone to lay, once poured ensure it is roughly the correct depth, use a level to also make sure it’s at the same height as the rest of the sand. Once you have made your adjustments lay the stepping stone and tamp down the stone using a heavy object. After you have checked that the stone is well fitted fill around the rest of the stone with soil.

Ensuring height

Once finished check with a level to make sure all of your stones are at the same height, make any adjustments necessary and follow up with brushing the stone so any excess sand will join with the rest.
