As an example we are going to use an apple tree, to prune an apple tree you are going to want to prune in early spring to stimulate flowering and also giving the tree a good shape.
Remove the Shoots
The first part of the pruning process is to remove the shoots at the bottom of the tree, these are generally little unwanted pieces of wood that are near the trunk, removing these will encourage your tree to grow in a healthy shape. Cut the shoots up to the base of the tree.
Dead Wood Removal
Remove dead wood so that infection won’t spread, infected and dead wood will not have any buds growing on their branches , if a branch does have a bud growing then snip a bit off the top of the branch so water is easier to collect.
Cross Branches
Branches that cross over need removing so that air can pass through the plant easier, making it so that the tree will not catch any diseases, branches that rub against each other can become infected, removing the branches also encourages healthy vase shaped tree’s.
The Rest
Cut the rest of the branches so that they are about half their current length allowing them to thicken and stimulate flowering.
