Begin this process in autumn. To ensure your soil is at its best, mix in multi purpose compost using a rake, or alternatively, use a soil improver. Tread on the soil firmly to remove any air pockets and create a firm surface.
Sowing the Seeds
Sow seeds around half an inch deep, seeds should be spaced five to six inches apart. Once the broccoli become around 7cm high, they area ready for transplanting. Ensure the plant is watered before moving, and kept well watered until established. Brussel spouts are not to be transplanted.
After Care
Ensure the water is soil is well drained throughout their growth. Use a deterrent to prevent birds picking the seeds.
Harvesting
The broccoli will be ready to harvest when the flower shoots are well formed however at this stage the flower buds will not have opened. If the flower buds shoot before they are harvested the broccoli will be tasteless.
Brussel sprouts can be harvested when the sprouts at the base of the stem reach the size of a small nut and are closed tightly.
To harvest the vegetables cut them with a sharp knife at the bottom of the stem.
