Tools Needed

Steel Brush, Wire Wool and Paint Brushes

Materials Needed

Oil Based Metal Primer Paint and Oil Based Metal Paint

Remove the Rust

Inspect the cast iron for rust, if rust is present, equip your safety gear. Remove the rust by using a metal wire brush, or wire wool. This will be time consuming and require considerable physical effort. You will not be able to remove 100% of the rust however you will want to be rid of as much as possible to allow your new paint to bond

Washing the Cast iron

Fill a bucket with hot water and soap, Use a rag to wash the cast iron, once the cast iron has been covered in soap, and wash it off with a hose, proceed to then dry the cast iron with a fresh rag and allow it to dry overnight

Painting the Cast iron

The first coat will consist of primer oil based paint this gives the top coat something to adhere to. Once coated, allow the cast iron to dry overnight. Once dry, you can complete the cast iron with a coat of oil based paint using a fresh brush. Then apply another layer once it has dried, to go over any rough spots
