How to fit an outside tap

Tools and Materials Needed

Drill Driver (or Hammer Drill and Screwdriver), Hammer, Grips or Adjustable Spanner, 20mm Masonry Drill bit, Masonry Bit (for raw plugs), Pencil, Tap, Wall plate and Copper Tube, PTFE Tape, Raw plugs, Screws.

Measuring, Marking and Drilling

Measure up from the floor to the height you want your tap. Make sure there are no services buried in the wall (electric cables, gas/water pipes). Mark the height that you want your tap with a pencil. Put your 20mm drill bit into your drill and drill through the wall. Note that the drill bit is 5mm larger than the diameter of the pipe. This allows a little bit of movement when fitting the tap or connecting to the water supply.

Fitting the Tap

Put some PTFE tape around the thread of your tap and screw this into the wall plate. Make sure you do this up as tight as it will go (use your spanner or grips). This should be done first because if you fix the wall plate to the wall first, when you screw the tap on it might not end up straight once fully tightened. Push the tap and wall plate through the wall and, making sure it’s level, mark the fixing points onto the wall with your pencil. Remove the tap and wall plate again and drill out the fixing holes. Put a raw plug into each hole and use your hammer to tap them flush with the wall. Put the tap and wall plate back into position and screw into place.
