Lay the gate down on the ground. Place the posts on either side of the gate and place the latch and hinges in position. Nail 5 2x1ā battens across the gate in a āZā shape so that the posts do not move when lifted up. Make sure that the bottom batten is at the same level as the bottom of the gate.
Digging the Post Holes
Start digging the post holes with your spade. The posts should sit at least 45cm below ground level. Dig down about 10cm below this and place a house brick at the bottom of each hole.
Installing the Posts
Place the posts, (still battened together), into the holes. Surround the posts with hardcore and firm around the posts. Use a spirit level to check both vertically and horizontally that the posts are level. Fill the rest of the holes up with concrete and slightly angle the top of the concrete so that any rain will fall away from the posts. Check again that the posts are level.
Finishing Off
Once the concrete is set, remove the battens. Attach the hinges and latch and then hang the gate.
