Once you have purchased your chosen cat flap, you will need to work out the positioning of it. It is suggested that the most suitable height would be 4-6 inches from the floor (this depends on the size of your cat). Using a pencil, mark the height in two places to make sure you get a straight line. To position your cat flap in the centre of the door, use a tape measure to locate this. Use a pencil to mark this point and then a ruler to draw a straight horizontal line through the centre mark.
Template
Using the paper template provided in your kit, align the bottom of it with your pencil line and attach it to the door with masking tape. Ensure that your centre point mark is in line with the centre point that is marked on the template.
Drilling
Select a flat drill bit that is slightly wider than your jigsaw blade. Drill the holes in each of the four corners of the template which will be clearly marked. These holes will enable you to cut the shape of the cat flap with your jigsaw.
Remember, when using a drill, to ensure that you wear safety goggles and ensure that all loose hair and clothing are tucked away.
Cutting the Hole
Use a ruler to connect all four holes as your saw guide. Using a jigsaw and with the door shut, cut along the pencil lines. Push the wood out from the hole and use sandpaper to smooth down the edges to provide a neat finish. Remove any sawdust from the area.
Check it Fits
Put the cat flap into opening and check that it opens and closes correctly and with ease. With this in position, use your pencil to mark the screw holes in each of the four corners.
Drilling the Screw Holes
Using a drill bit that is slightly narrower than the screws, drill the pencil marks in the four corners. These holes should go right through the door to the other side.
Fitting the Cat Flap
Holding the front of the cat flap in position, ease the screws into position, so that you can put the back of the cat flap into place. Whilst holding the front, fit the nuts onto the screws. Whilst holding the nut with one hand, use a screwdriver to tighten the screws. Repeat this with all four screws making sure that they are as tight as they can be.
Make sure that the cat flap moves freely
