How to batten a wall

Tools and Materials Needed

Hand Saw, Square, Hammer Drill, Drill Driver, Spirit Level, Tape Measure, Hammer, Masonry Bit, Wall Plugs, Pencil, Screws, Timber, Bench or Trestles.

Preparation

Use your spirit level to check that the wall is level. If the wall runs out at all, you will need to use some wedges or plastic packers to bring the battens out and make them plumb. Measure the height of the wall with your tape measure, mark the timber with your pencil and use your square to mark a straight line where you want to cut. Use your saw to cut the timber.

The First Upright

Place the first batten against the wall and mark some fixing points on to the timber. Avoid fixing into the wall and mark the fixing points at 12 – 18 inch intervals down the timber. Place the batten against the wall, starting in the left or right corner. Use your hammer drill with the masonry bit attached and drill through the marking holes on the batten into the bricks or blocks behind. Remove the batten again and drill out the holes deep enough for the plugs and screws. Place a wall plug into each of the holes and tap flush with your hammer. Use your drill driver to drive the screws home.

The Uprights

Cut some more battens to length. The distances between the upright battens will depend on the size of plasterboard you are going to use. For example – if you are using 6x3 ft sheets, the middle of the next batten will want to be 3ft from the wall that the first batten is flush with. This will allow you to fix the plasterboard to the battens evenly (see the video for a more detailed explanation). Use some offcuts to create a fixing point for your skirting along the bottom of the studwork.

Cross Timbers

Measure up the uprights to the height of your plasterboard and mark with your pencil. Cut some batten to fit in between the uprights and screw into place. Remember that the cross timbers want to be in the middle of the line you have drawn across the uprights. this is so that the plasterboard will have something to fix onto. You are now ready to plasterboard.
