Tools Needed

Drill Driver, Hammer, Tape Measure, Chisel, Screwdrivers (flathead and pozi), Wood Bit, Pilot Bit, Pencil.

Materials Needed

Yale Lock

Step 1 : Measuring & Marking

Measure up from the bottom of the door to where you want your lock to be. Mark this with your pencil. On the lock packaging, it should tell you how far back the lock needs to be from the edge of the door. Mark this across the height mark and you should have a cross. This will be where you need to drill the door out for the barrel.

Step 2: The Barrel and Lock Plate

Make sure the door is stable (use door wedges or your foot), and with your drill and wood bit, drill through the door on the centre of the cross. Take the lock and offer it up to the door. Mark where the lock needs to be with your pencil. Take the barrel of the lock and place it through the door. Make sure it is straight on the front of the door. Take the lock plate and put it into place. Use the screws provided to screw the plate, through the hole you drilled, to the barrel. Don’t over tighten these as you may have to adjust later.

Step 3: Rebating the Lock

Place the lock onto the lock plate. This can be a bit fiddly so have a bit of patience. Now you can see where you need to rebate the lock into the edge of the door. Draw around the lock again now that it is in place and remove the lock once again from the plate. Take a chisel and, making sure the door is secure, carefully chisel out the timber.

Step 4: Fixing the Lock

Take your drill and pilot bit and drill out for the lock plate fixing screws. Now screw into place. Just check that the barrel is still straight. Next, place the lock over the lock plate. The bar from the barrel must insert into the slot on the back of the lock. Again, this can be a bit tricky. On the side of the lock where the catch is, secure the lock to the plate using the screws provided. Check the lock using the key and also the handle.

Step 5: The Slam Plate

Close the door up and mark on the door lining where the top and bottom of the lock is. Open the door again and place the slam plate between the two lines. Draw around this and chisel out as before. Once chiselled, place the slam plate back into the recess and check that it is flush with the door lining. Next mark the fixing screw holes and pilot drill the screw positions. Don’t forget the middle screw hole which is in the centre of the lock at a 45 degree angle. Screw into place. The middle screw will be a longer one. Close the door and check that everything is working properly.
