Checking the Wall
Once you install wood panelling, you will not be able to see the bottom of the wall, so before you begin check the skirting boards for signs of existing rot or damp.
Marking the Batten Positions
Mark the position of the three battens that will support your panelling, the battens must be placed level at the top, bottom and in the middle. To do this, use a spirit level.
Fixing the Battens
Adjust the battens to fit along the length of the wall. Once satisfied, fix the battens to the wall using screws and wall plugs at 60cm intervals. Repeat this process for each wall you are going to panel before proceeding.
Fixing the Panels
Cut your vertical boards to the height of the wall minus 10mm for movement, place your vertical board on the wall ensuring it is level with a spirit level. Begin from the corner of a room. Use panel pins to fix the boards onto your battens. Use a nail punch to ensure the heads sink below the surface to hide all of the fixings.
The Finishing Touches
Glue L-shaped timber mouldings over both internal and external corners.
