Clearing and Sealing

Using the boards to move around on, remove any debris between the joists and ensure that the area is relatively clean. Seal any gaps around where pipes and cables enter the loft through the ceiling.

Insulating Between the Joists

Unpack a roll of insulation and starting at the eaves; slowly roll out the insulation between the joists. Leave a small gap (25mm) at the eaves to allow for ventilation. The insulation should be fed underneath any pipes or cables. When you have laid your first piece of insulation, start at the other end of the loft at the opposite eave and roll out the insulation towards your first piece. When they meet, make a straight cut with your knife and butt the two ends up together. You will find it easier and safer cutting at this point instead of trying to cut at the eaves. Cover the whole area of the loft in between the joists.

Insulating Over the Joists

Once you have insulated between the joists, repeat the process across the joists and insulation you have already put down. This should be laid across the width of the joists. Use the same method as insulating between the joists. Work towards the loft hatch as this will minimise the need to clamber around on top of the newly laid insulation once you have finished.
