How to render a blockwork wall part 1
Pages: 1 All

Tools Needed

Step Ladders or a Crate, Plastering Bath or Cement Mixer, Standard Bucket x 2, Shovel, Finishing Trowel, Plasterers Hawk, Bucket Trowel, Large Brush, Protective Gloves, Scratching Tool, Snips, Plastic Float, Feather Edge.

Materials Needed

Plastering Sand, Cement, Water proofer.

Step 1 : Beads

Firstly, if you have any beads then put these in place.

Step 2 : Mixing Your Cement

Now mix your sand and cement up to a ratio of 4:1:1 (4 parts sand, 1 part cement, 1 part water). If you are rendering an exterior wall then make sure you use a water proofer or plasticiser. If you are mixing up in a plasterers bath, then firstly mix the sand together with the cement. The easiest way to do this is to keep transfering it from one end of the bath to the other. Now gradually add water until you reach the right consistency.

Step 3 : Applying The Scratch Coat

Block-work tends to be very porous so I always tend to use a large brush and splash some clean water on the wall. Now using your hawk and trowel apply the render from the bottom up using large strokes. You'll want a thickness of about 8-10mm. Leave to dry for about 15-20 minutes and then using your scratch tool run it over your render horizontally, try not to go to deep. Now leave to dry for about an hour or two.

Step 4 : Second Coat

Once dry, repeat step 2. Splash the wall again with fresh water and apply the second coat. Same again, start from the bottom and use long strokes. You’ll want the same thickness again, about 8-1omm, over sail the beads as you will scrape some back off.

Step 5 : Rule Off Your Wall

Now all your render is on, take your feather edge and carefully go both vertically and horizontally across your wall, scraping off any excess render and ensuring its completely flat, fill in any hollows you may have then use your feather-edge again. Leave to dry for about an hour.

Step 6 : Floating Your Wall

Now take your plastic float and working in a figure of 8, carefully work your wall until it's even more flatter.

Step 7 : Give Your Wall A Key

With your plastic float, pop a few screws in the end, around four. The screws should be about 2mm proud. Now very much the same as floating, work in a figure of 8 so that you leave a key for the plaster.
