Tools and Materials Needed

Adjustable Spanner, Flat headed Screwdriver, Pliers, Rubber washers (various sizes) and Wire Wool

Preparation

Begin by turning the water off. If you can’t find a valve under the sink, you will need to turn the mains supply off. Turn the tap on to drain the remaining water out of the system.

Removing the Headgear

All types of stem tap work in the same way and will have a decorative cap. Remove this by using a flat headed screwdriver and then undo the screw underneath. Use your fingers to remove the headgear as using a spanner or wrench will cause damage. If your tap does not have a cap, there will be a small screw on the side which you will be able to remove to lift of the headgear.

Removing the Packing Nut

Using the adjustable spanner release the hexagonal packing nut. It may help if you hold the spout of the tap, with one hand, for leverage. Once this has been loosened, you can lift out the entire tap system.

Replacing the Washer

You will find the washer at the bottom of the stem. It may have a nut holding it in place which can be removed using your fingers or the pliers. Prise out the washer and it is likely that you will see the damage that has occurred. Choose a washer closest in size and slide it onto the stem. Replace the nut if there was one.

Cleaning

Using the wire wool, give the stem a rub down to remove any dirt and limescale. Check the bit of the tap that is still attached to the sink for wear. Use the wire wool to clean the inside and remove any debris and lime scale.

Re-fit the Tap

Put the tap back together making sure that everything is tightened well. Turn the water back on.
