The most efficient trowels are developed with one piece of solid forged steel; this increases the strength of the trowel and provides it with balance and flexibility. The extra balance allows the bearer more control and reduces fatigue.
The Difference in Shapes and Styles
Different shapes and styles are used to perform different jobs, for example a bricklayers trowel will have a longer blade then a pointing trowel. Research what trowel best suits the job you are looking to accomplish.
Brick Laying Trowels
There are three different trowel sizes however there is no difference between them, it is all down to personal preference.
Before purchasing a trowel, ensure the weight suits you otherwise you can damage your wrist after using your trowel for a length of time. If you are intending on laying concrete then a large trowel is appropriate however for standard brickwork we recommend a medium sized trowel.
Plastering Trowels
A plasterers trowel is often his most useful tool, so comfort plays a large role. The trowels are available with different handles such as wooden, plastic and metal. A trowel with a pre-worn shape will be the ideal purchase, the shape is beneficial because it plasters without leaving any ripple marks or lines.
Tiling Trowels
There are three basic forms of tiling trowels, these are the notched trowel, the grout flout trowel and the margin trowel. The notched trowel is used to spread the initial adhesive onto the surface however the grout float trowel is used to smooth and force grout into the joints. The margin trowel is used to mix, spread and scrape compounds such as mortar and grout.
